Story
Through VPSN, our focus is on supporting educators and institutions as Virtual Production continues to evolve across real-time workflows, hybrid and remote production models, and increasingly complex creative and technical teams.
VPSN responds to industry changes by strengthening the Virtual Production Studio Network, which enables Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and industry partners to connect, share knowledge, and adapt collectively to changing production realities.
The project develops flexible frameworks, field-specific learning guides, and open resources that support educators in designing curricula aligned with real-world workflows, institutional structures, and evolving industry expectations. Rather than prescribing tools or fixed pipelines, VPSN emphasises production literacy, collaboration, and informed decision-making across creative, technical, and production roles.
Our frameworks enable diverse HEIs, each with different levels of access, infrastructure, and expertise to engage with Virtual Production in ways that are relevant to their context. As studios increasingly operate across distributed teams and rely less on in-house training, the role of education in preparing adaptable, production-ready talent becomes critical.
VPSN bridges this gap by providing educators with access to Virtual Production studios, shared knowledge, and case-based insights, while fostering a common understanding of contemporary workflows, collaboration practices, and sustainable approaches to production.

Results
Through extensive research and analysis, we generate in-depth knowledge about Virtual Production and how it can be implemented in higher education within the film and animation industries.
Our approach provides a basis for teaching and workshop material to guide educational organizations and provides a scientific basis for including VP in formal education.

VPSN 2.0 Train The Trainer & Train the Student
As part of the VPSN2, Cradle leads two structured training activities in 2026, contributing expertise in virtual production, emerging technologies, and hands-on studio education.
Train the trainer
Workshop 1 · 2026
Emerging VP technologies for educators
A dedicated workshop equipping partner educators with practical knowledge of the latest virtual production tools and workflows. Participants develop hands-on proficiency across Unreal Engine, Gaussian splatting, and AI-driven production pipelines — enabling them to bring these skills back to their own institutions.
Topics: Unreal Engine, Gaussian splatting, AI in virtual production
Audience: Partner institution educators and trainers
Student training
Workshop 2 · 2026
Week-long on-campus VP stage workshop
An intensive week-long workshop hosted at the Cradle Lab’s professional virtual production stage, open to students from partner institutions. Participants gain direct experience operating a full VP pipeline in a live studio environment, guided by Cradle’s research and production team.
Format: Full week, on-site at BUas
Audience: Students from VPSN partner institutions
